Is Canada a nation apart, or a subnation of a greater North American nation?!

Canada's its own country because, while it's culture is (as much as I hate to admit it) VERY similar to America's, it is still self-governing and makes its own choices!. Like free healthcare and legal same-sex marriages!. Just remember, Ecuador and Columbia have very similar cultures but nobody ever questions whether they're the same country or not!.
