So the Wicked Witch of the East had a fit this weekend because she couldn't have my oldest daughter when SHE wanted her!. My husband has only the one day to spend with his kids because of his work schedule!. He planned a day for us to spend together as a family!. Now!.!.!.you need to understand that this same woman also plays favorites with her grandchildren!. She NEVER takes our children to spend time with them unless her other "Special" Grandson is there!. She always has her other grandchildren any spare time that she has!. Not so much as an offer to take our kids for us even for a few hours, so her son and his wife could enjoy dinner alone without children!. My children, unlike the other grandkids are well behaved and are also well mannered!. So I don't get why she has to be this way!.!.!.

My ex's mom cursed me out in Gaelic one time, it was quite the experience!. When I was still married I handled my family and she handled hers!. There came a point when I just had enough of the B!.S!. especially trying to visit a million people on the Holidays, that i just told everyone in a nice way to F-off and stopped making myself nuts trying to accommodating everyone!. The way I looked at it was if you want to see the kids we will schedule something and if I need your help or want you to watch them and you don't ever want too, well then I can make it so we don't schedule you in this year!.!.!.!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
I agree that she has no right to be upset!. Has your husband explained the situation to her!? Whether she likes it or not, if you guys already have plans, you already have plans!. Offer to let her see the kids another day!. If she's not happy with that, well then that's her problem!. Just try not to lose your cool, and try to be the bigger person!.

all you can really do is let your husband know that these situations bother you and ask if he'll talk to his mother about it!.

Your mother in law should understand that your husband only has the one day!. Offer for her to take them on a different day!. If she refuses, then her loss!. Sounds to me like she's controlling and needs to be told so!. You don't marry the family, just into it and that doesn't give them the right to try and control things!. Well!. I've always heard your quote in your question title to be stated the opposite!. When you get married, you DO marry your spouse's family!.
I don't think the issue here is her "right" to be upset!. Based on what you've written, it's clear you don't believe she does!. And if the story is as one-sided as you've stated it then she definitely has no right to be upset!.
I would caution you not to make comments about the other grandchildren!. Don't let what the Mother is doing cause a line of division between you and the other parents and grandkids!.
Keep your cool and deal with her honestly and fairly!. If she throws fits as a result, let her!. Be the bigger person and just learn to tune it out and shelter your children from it as best you can!.
I grew up without my biological father!. Nobody in my family taught me to hate him for leaving before I was born!. They told me the truth about him leaving and left it at that!. As a result, I grew up without alot of the insecurities that come from not knowing my "real" dad!. You definitely want to teach your kids to respect Grandma!. Even if she's crazy, you'd be doing the right thing!.
