Have you almost been at risk of arrest? Hear my story!?!

Question: Have you almost been at risk of arrest!? Hear my story!!?
It was almost a week ago on a Saturday!. We were at San Bruno (a city in California) and my mom wanted to do a little shopping and my dad wanted to get some Starbucks!. We decided to go to a BarnesandNoble for the Starbucks first!. My dad found out they didn't have deCaff (and neither did the rest of the mall)!. While I was waiting, I went to check out their selection of books!.

Here's when it gets interesting!. I was the last person to leave BarnesandNoble to go to the rest of the mall!. My parents were calling out to me to hurry up!. I had to rush out quickly!. Here's the problem!. In my pouch in my jacket, I was carrying a Twilight book I was finishing up!. I could barely contain the book since my pouch was a little small and it was obvious that I had a book in there!. As I was leaving the store, it looked like I was in a hurry and as soon as I crossed the scanner, it went BEEP BEEP!!! There was a woman passing at the same time I was and then a security guard came up to me and I had to immediately explain that this book was already mine and I bought it a few days ago at the BarnesandNoble in my town!. My parents came to the rescue to tell him that they had a reciept from books they bought me at Borders and that calmed the security guard down!.

While I did purchase the other 3 Twilight books at Borders, there was no proof that the first Twilight book I had with me was also purchased at Borders or at another BarnesandNoble!. Luckly, the security cop didn't ask to look at the reciept!.

Since I'm 18, if my parents haven't come to the rescue, I would be in a prison cell right now and charged with shoplifting!. I don't know what went wrong that day!. My Twilight book didn't contain any alarm slips but I think either the woman who passed the scanner at the same time I did either didn't have her alarms removed properly or she was actually the one shoplifiting!.

Sorry if my story is so long!. Now can I hear yours!?

I don't think you were seriously at risk of getting arrested!. The Security guard would have had to have observed you actually pocketing the book, and have kept you within eyesight from that point on!.
In North America the adage of "innocent until proven guilty" holds and not only that, the Constitution gives you the right to not incriminate yourself!.
In the situation you describe you had the right to tell the security guard to go fly a kite!. The onus for proving where the book came from was on the security guard, not you!. Had you told the guard to buzz off, he would have had two choices: to restrain you until the police came and arrested you, or let you go!. Unless he was absolutely sure that you stole the book, (which he wasn't) the wise choice would have been to let you go!. Don't forget that if he has you falsely arrested, both he and his employer could face a lawsuit once the whole mess was cleared up!.
I once set off an alarm at a pharmacy with dvd's i had just bought!. The security guard was nasty, so i decided I wasn't going to do his job for him!. I told him to buzz off and walked away!.!.!. there was nothing he could do!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
