Question: Why does the Hulks shirt rip off but not his pants!?

There is no good answer!.
The truth is that in the original comic books the hulks pants all but tear off his body!. What is left on him as he fights is the shreds of his pants which are made of a stronger fabric than his shirt or socks and not a strong a fabric as his shoes or belt!. that is why they hung onto his body even when it would make sense for his pants to rip off!.
If you watched the Lou Ferigno television series you saw that the tore the pants down the sides and if you assume his waste band blew the remains of the pants hang on the bigger body some what like a skirt!.
Needless to say when David Banner wakes up the pants are ruined!.
What is more interesting to Hulk fans is how no matter what color pants Banner is wearing the Hulk is always wearing purple ones!.
This is where Hollywood stepped in and said that the gamma radiation causes the pants to turn colors and expand like the Hulk!. It is a laughable explanation but they tendered it to the audience!.
You could lie and sat they are maternity pants!. It is better than the truth!. the truth is that the pants do tear off and what you are faced with is an angry naked man!.
Go with the gamma radiation and that will help the boy out!. If he asks why only the pants expand tell him that while the rest of his body is coursing with anger and energy the area around the mail genitals is not effected!. Subsequently, the radiation effects that area differently!.
Or just lie!. In time he will figure it out!. Stan Lee messed up!. then again he is rich and the Hulk is loved so it was not that bad a mistake!.
