the symbols are actually made up of normal keyboard letters, for example, :) is smiley face and :D is a grinning face so if u have msn, go onto an offline message, click on the smiley face symbol, move your mouse over a symbol and see what the keyboard controls are!.
if u don't have msn, you could try look on the internet for smiley faces

Okay, so if you're on a PC, and not a Mac, these are the directions:
Click the Start button!.
Scroll over All Programs!.
Scroll over accessories!.
Scroll over System Tools!.
Click on Character Map!.
The Character Map has all the symbols your computer can create!.
Scroll down some, and you'll see symbols like:
????????? , etc!.!.!.
