We need to see that is "Quality of life" first, because this could mean different things to different people, maybe for some people the happiness means to have all the newest devices, but for other people could mean health, love, etc!.

Machines are necessary not only to maintain the quality of life, but also the quantity of life!. Period!. Anyone who knows what its like to farm would know that!. We simply could not produce the amount of food we produce, nor distribute it to those who need it, without machinery!.
