I did some research and could not find any specifics, however, I found a site that has 900ft and 2400ft transmitter plans. The main thing is when transmitting on FM, you have to be sure to not cause interference within your neighborhood. CD player FM transmitters have been powered down for this reason, to prevent the person next to you on the road hearing what you are listening to or more importantly, not interfering with their radio.
When you get to where you interfere with neighbors, all it takes is one complaint for you to have to lower the distance or shut it down altogether.
A person had a light show based on music with Christmas lights. To not distract the nighbors he used an fm transmitter so people going by could listen to the music through their car sterio. So this would be say a 100 ft range I believe. That is just an example of one being used that was in the media.
