Local small market radio/t.v. sucks!?!

Question:

Local small market radio/t.v. sucks!?

If you've been to big cities and then had to spend time in a small city, you'll know immediately just how bad radio/t.v. in a small market is... I'm not just talking music selection or locally produced newscasts, i'm also talking about local radio persoanlities and local commercials as well. Some of this stuff is so bad that I have to turn it OFF.

Answers:

Not all small market stations are that bad. I have worked in both small and large markets, and let me tell you, You can have much more fun in a small market! When you are working in the larger market stations, everything is so tightly formatted you barely have any wiggle room to be creative. In the smaller markets you are usually free to actually put what you want on the air, on the air.

Yes, it is true that some of the really small micro-market stations are just painful to listen to. But you know what they say, "you have to start somewhere."
My first radio gig straight out of college was spinning Polka music on a dinky AM station. It took me a while, but I finally made it to a major market after years of paying my dues. But I still have some fond memories of working in the little markets.... Except for the polkas....... I used to sit in the studio and literally pull my hair out listening to that stuff!
