What is the best recording label to go after?!

Question:

What is the best recording label to go after?

i've been singing forever but how do i know which recording label is the best? i've heard about A&R, but is it any good, like so so def?

Answers:

it really depends on what you want to do; i'm sensing that you might not even get in the door of a recording label; a major, anyway. that's not due to being 'underqualified' or not good, but because it's just not structured like that...the industry, that is.

do you have anything recorded? NO record label is going to court you without having any tunes to sing. where are you at? do you have any demos? if not, you need to see if someone will help you get a demo together...get some songs to sing. NEXT, you have to record it and play out on it. develop a following.

not to sound harsh, but there are like a million young girls and guys who have been 'singing forever' and you won't stand out unless you have a mailing list with a few thousand names on it and at least 1000 CDs sold out of the back of your car. UNLESS, you get an indie to front your first record, this will be the case, but the way all of this is now, the indies are just glamorous demo houses.

good luck.

EDIT:
to answer your question, the best major label there (inasmuch as a small roster) is virgin...and it's been that way for at least 15 years. the other labels won't support you any more than they support the other thousand people they've signed. VIrgin has a smaller roster and focuses on their artists more.

i'd forget about majors for a long, long time. go for an indie who will get your record made.....and who has a good enough 'in' with a publishing house to get some decent songs, because some indie records' songs are SHHHHIIIIIIITTT! so stupid. lol. :0

good luck. :)
