Why do west coast radio stations call letters start with a K and east with a W?

Example Las Vegas KOMP, Washington D.C. WJFK


Answers:

The East Coast stations were (at the time) owned by Westinghouse. The West of the Mississippi stations were owned by Kaiser.Hence, KRLA and WABC.
