What does the k in radio and TV stations stand for?!

Question:

What does the k in radio and TV stations stand for?

I've seen and heard about loads of TV and radio stations that start with the letter 'K'. What does the K signify?

KFOG, KTVU etc

Answers:

All radio and TV stations have to have "call letters", which are the KFOG, KTVU, etc. They make application to the FCC for a license to construct and operate. The FCC assigns call letters, generally beginning with the letter "K" - west of the Mississippi and beginning with the letter "W" - east of the Mississippi. A station can then apply to change the call letters to one of their choosing providing it is not already in use, but must still keep the "K" or "W", which ever is appropriate for their location.
