Answers: I have Sirius, which is practically the same. You have to subscribe or the radio doesn't get the satellite signal.

XM radios do not pick up FM or AM signals. They only pick up satellite feeds from XM.

You have to subscibe to them.

There is only one service for XM Radio. $12.95/month. No such thing as the basic radio. If you are talking about getting AM/FM why wouldn't you just buy a regular radio and not XM's hardware?

You definitely have to pay to subscribe and can not use the equipment for regular AM/FM radio listening. If you are interested in getting satellite radio, though, you should check out www.SatelliteSweeps.com. The website gives away a free satellite radio everyday, so at least that kinda makes up for having to pay a monthly fee to subscribe.

Hope this helps!
