Radio evolved as part theory, part discovery and part invention.
Marconi did not discover radio. The hypothesis and discovery of the possibility that radio could exist was made by James Maxwell who set forth the theory of magnetic waves. Then Heinrich Hertz created these waves in a laboratory setting.
Once the existence of the waves became known, several men fought for years over patents to various types of transmitters, receivers and their associated components for these waves. Included were Marconi, Edison, Tesla and many others.
It finally came down to Tesla and Marconi, with Marconi winning a Nobel Prize and being awarded the majority of the patents. Tesla fought it and eventually the case was won by his estate - tragically just months after his death in the early 1940s. By then radio was a well-established medium.
It was quite the controversy back in the day.
As to children AND humans - you can figure that part out. Radio is all around you.

There is a controversy over who invented the radio. Look on wickapedia under who invented the radio for that one and for the history of radio type history of radio in. Ligonier, Indiana is known for it's radio history musium, it's about the only thing in that town, I've been there because I live about 30 miles from there. Basically, Tesla invented the transmitter and receiver and Marconi used the inventions of Tesla to make a device that both received and transmitted em waves.
Basically Marconi took duct tape and glued several of Tesla's inventions together without Tesla's knowledge or permission.
Tesla made a remote control model boat using radio technology, but Marconi was the one who figured out to use it for communication (even if he used Tesla's technology)
Tesla was so pissed off because all his life people richer then him (Edison, Marconi) kept putting him down and stealing his ideas. He publicly called Marconi an '@ss'
So finally, once Tesla died, he was given full credit for the creation of the radio.
Radio opened up wireless communications between distant places without the added bother of using a telegraph line. Thats kind of the point of radio.
