Handheld Radio Relay?!
Question: I have a problem in the area that I hunt in. We hunt on a mountain and even though I have a longer range radio (ie. 20+ mile range), I still can not contact anyone on the opposite side of the mountain. I was trying to look and see if there is any kind of radio relay station or reciever that I can set up like on my car or something so I can relay my signal over a larger distance. I was looking at radio repeaters but I don't know if they are legal or if there are any rules/ laws against using them. Any advice on this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You won't contact because the mountain blocks the signal... you will have to have something that goes over the mountain (in other words it will have to be at the top) to actually get over that mountain.
For non licensed radios in the US, Forget it as radio repeaters are technically illegal for repeating as most have to have the antenna firmly attached to the radio.
Some people who hunt (If not done for profit) use amateur radio but requires all in a party to become licensed but is the easiest way to relay out of a vehicle.
For those not wanting to take a skills test, can get a GMRS license or business license (the GMRS uses the high powered frequencies around the FRS radio range and can get better range as most FRS radios are advertised at GMRS ranges not the true frs range) which both can utilize repeaters and with the more expensive business band, can be encyrpted so no one can hear how your hunt is going by giving off your favorite spots.
So basically, to do it legal.. you are looking for a license
