In the U!.S!., there is a difference between "pirate" and legally operating a low power station!.

The problems come if you are transmitting with a lot of power and interfering with a licensed station!.

Generally, the FCC will use a field strength tracker of sorts to find out where the signal is coming from!.

They will require that you either: a!.) comply with the rules
immediately or b!.) shut down!.

If you go back on the air with illegal power at this point, you mostly will get a cease-and-desist letter!. If you ignore that, you will receive a "NAL" resulting in up to a $10,000 fine,
which is the most common; they may confiscate the equipment; and a prison term if you've ignored everything up to this point!.

However,

You CAN legally operate a low power station under Part 15 of the Commission's rules!. On AM, the power is 100 milliwatts total power to the final!. This is 1/10th of 1 watt!.
This can actually get you up to a couple of miles with the allowed 10 foot antenna!.

On FM, it's not power level!. They measure for field strength!.
It's so restricted that if you get out 1/2 mile, you are probably over the limit!. Legally you can expect to get about 200 feet!.

I highly recommend against operating as a pirate!. I have operated legal low power AMs for years, while also working in commercial radio!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Pirate radio is a lot of fun and can be quite profitable too!. In the UK pirate radio changed the future of radio broadcasting i!.e Radio caroline, which caused the creation of Radio one, and even today pirates are paid to plug new bands!. (I think the going rate is around 100 pounds for 4 plays of a track)

However, Pirate radio is illegal! You can however apply for a limited range licence which runs for about a month, meaning you would have to put in multiple applications and keep changing your station name, not to mention that it costs around 1000 pounds for the licence!. (I'm probably outdated on my info here) But you can get full details from the home office by phoning them!.
If you do run your own station illegally, then you need to take precautions!. You position your transmitter on top of a tower block and you broadcast to it via microwave link!. This makes it possible for the transmitter to be discovered but not you !
However, the detector vans do record your voice and carry voice analysis equipment, so stay out of their way!
If you do get caught, unless things have changed recently the first time offence was 1000 pounds, second time imprisonment, although with overcrowding etc you're most likely to get a suspended sentence!
My info may be a little out of date, long time since I heard of this type of thing but it will give you a rough idea!Www@Enter-QA@Com

If you're in the UK (as I'd expect on here) you can't transmit on ANY frequency without a licence, no such thing as 'free radio' or 'LPFM' forget all that rubbish!.

It's an unlimited fine and even a 5 year prison sentence!.

You'd probably get less punishment for mugging/beating/robbing/raping someone!. :-(

Pathetic!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

nothing will happen to you as long as the signal dose not
go beyond 1/4 mile and you are not interfering with a commercial broadcast and you must stick to commercial
broadcast rules "no profanity" and you cannot profit from
your broadcast!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

You would be given a very large fine!.
But you can legally transmit a free radio station, As long as no one over 3-4km can pick it up!.

Which means you can legally transmit a weak signalWww@Enter-QA@Com

If you were on land you would be charged under the Wireless Telegraphy Act (1949) and if you were on a boat you would be charged under MEBO (Marine Broadcasting Offences, 1967) as well!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

DEPENDS WHO CAUGHT YOU AND WEAR YOU WEAR TRANSMITTING FROM AND WAS IT YOUR FIRST OFFENCEWww@Enter-QA@Com

Ye be asked to walk the plank me pretty Arrrrrrr!. Tip top!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I'd call the rozzers!Www@Enter-QA@Com
