Are we allowed to listen to a Radio in the workshop?!

Question: Are we allowed to listen to a Radio in the workshop!?
We work in a fair sized railway repair workshop with about 20-30 people actively working in there!. We have a radio in there and we always listened to it as it gave us something else to listed to apart from the noise of machinery!. We have been told however that this is ileagal and we actually need a license to listen to a radio when there are more than 6 of us as this is deemed to be an audience!. Is this right!? If so where do we get one from!? And how much do they cost!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
yes, you should have a licence!. And no it does NOT need to be PAT tested, it needs a "Formal Visual Inspection" every 24 months (it'll be Class 2 equipment) or is exempt if battery-powered!.

Yes, you do need a license from the PRS!.

The employer may not allow you to bring your own radio as it would need PAT testing!.

I'd have a discussion - one on one - with someone senior who can help with this!. Pick a representative from amongst the workers who is good at putting a point across calmly and understanding things clearly!.

That person can then understand the issues, you can meet to discuss it afterwards and then perhaps your 'representative' can go back to the senior with some proposed solutions!.

I think you'll be able to get your radio back on if you handle this the right way! Www@Enter-QA@Com

it depends on your employer!. you do need a licence to listen to radio, you also need a dog licence but how many people have one!.as long as the radio / stereo has no baring wires and is of sound structure get it p!.a!.t!. tested!. then theres no argument health and safety wise!.and by the way make sure there kettle, toaster and anything electrical they use is p!.a!.t!.tested!. otherwise no argument!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.someone who p!.a!.t!. tests does"nt have to be an electrician!. but has knowledge in this field!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

You could be contravening performing rights!. Have a word with the performing rights society!. They charges are based on the amount of people listening to the music and the size of the area the music is being played, but its generally relevant to pubs etc!. I've never heard of it being required in a workshop or office!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

If it's a personal radio rather than a company owned one you do not need a licence!.
If the company provided it you would need one and they are expensive and we are not talking about a radio licence but one from the Performing Rights Society who pay the money into a fund for performers!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

Yes you do need a license it isnt expensive tho
