It would seem everyone got it right but nobody seems to know why!.
Amplitude modulation means the signal, or information, is transmitted in the variation of the amplitude!. IE: the encoding of a carrier wave by variation of its amplitude in accordance with an input signal!.
That's geek talk!. It means you vary the signal strength to send your information!. Power!.
Frequency modulation means you vary the frequency to encode the carrier wave input signal!. Geek translation: instead of power you employ finesse!.
This explains why XPRS Radio (AM) with Wolfman Jack, back in the 60's, was a pirate radio station!. It broadcast on 100,000 watts from Mexico and interrupted the signal of many legal stations in the Southwest US!.
Under the right atmospheric conditions a 10,000 watt FM station can be heard across the US!. I remember becoming fascinated with radio when I listened, back in '59, to a New York FM station signal that was "lifted" due to atmospheric conditions and transmitted all the way to Kansas City!. In Radio School I found out the reason it kept playing the same song over and over ("Little Star" by Dion & The Belmonts)
was because of the storage ability of capacitors and their slowly leeching the sound back across the circuit board!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

it is something to do with the transmitting signal
frequency modulation for FM
amplitude modulation for AM
there is a good example in the picture shown in the link below to show how to signal is carried under "Analog modulation methods"Www@Enter-QA@Com

Fm is frequency modulation and to explain it easily its commonly called Freaking Magic [ Very technical ]
Am is call amplitude modulation a lot like the wave form in ac power in the walls
