Katie, here's a quick, cheap way to protect your material!.
If you wrote the songs and music, mail a copy of the recorded songs along with the sheet music/lyric sheet to yourself - make sure you put your name and address and the date on each sheet of paper and the recorded label (whether tape or flash drive, etc)!. Seal the packaging and sign your name across one section with a big Sharpie, so that it goes across any area where the tape or sealant contacts the packaging!. USPS Priority mail envelopes are especially good for this at $4!.80 US
Don't open it when it arrives - just put it somewhere safe!. That's a sorta redneck copyright that will work in a pinch!.
If something should come up and you get famous and have some money, you can then go through the long (fairly) expensive process of legally copyrighting them with the trademark & patent office!.
