Anyone else noticed how radio DJs...?!

Question: Anyone else noticed how radio DJs!.!.!.!?
All play the same songs over and over!? I know they get given a playlist!. I'm just wondering if anyone else finds this as annoying as I do, because I used to like songs like The Man Who Can't Be Moved and Miss Independent, but they have now been played to death and hearing them brings on fits of murderous rage!. Am I alone!? Why are they doing this!? Surely they know how annoying it is!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

I’ve been in radio for over 10 years and I'll give you the rundown as to why you hear the same songs over and over again!.

Over fifty years ago somebody came up with the idea to play the same 40 songs over and over (every 76 minutes) because that is what people wanted to hear, just the hits!. That is where Top 40 music came from!. As lame as it may sound, people actually would tune-in because they knew they would hear their favorite song soon!. The longer they listened, the more money they could charge for commercial air-time!.

Back then, the DJ had a lot of influence on what got on the air!. Now, they have absolutely no say!. Radio companies, for decades now have hired radio consultants for their advice and research companies to do music research for them!. They would get a large amount of people in an auditorium and have them take a survey about music!. The company would play a few short seconds of a song and have people write down if the loved it, liked it, kind of liked it, don't like it, or burned out!. People ended up choosing music they where more comfortable with or knew, versus trying something new!. also, record labels lobby music and program directors about what new songs get played and how many times per week they get played!.

Like I said in earlier, the DJ has absolutely no influence on what gets played, when it plays, and how many times it gets played!. The companies listen to the consultants and researchers to program what they think is a winning formula for success!. All of this, so they can keep you listening longer and to charge advertisers top dollar!. History has proven this formula works and until there is a catastrophic failure, they will continue to use it!.

You may not be a lemming, but there are more lemmings out there that accept it the way it is, versus individuals like you who like real variety!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

As someone in the radio industry in the USA, I can say for every song you cannot stand, there is someone who is in love with it!. Most likely, you are someone who listens to the radio more than just 15 to 45 few minutes a day!. Plus, if you are listening to a radio station that is geared for younger listeners (18-49 year old), they will spin the songs faster than a station geared to a 25-54 year old, so that in that 15 to 45 minute window, they hear the most popular songs!.

How they find out the most popular songs is either with a audience research project or a weekly callout, in which they play a clip of a song and the participant rates it based on how familiar it is, how tired they are of it and how much they like it!.
Again, it isn't perfect, but it does work to please as many people at one time as possible!.

I know this doesn't help, but maybe you can understand there is a method to the madness!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Sadly, a number of radio stations have programme controllers who THINK they know what the public wants, and that's what gets put on the playlist!. Good programme controllers work with other members of staff who have different musical tastes, and that improves the balance!.
However, they have to keep people listening, so advertisers will keep coming back, so going for the lowest common denominator is quite common!.
The trouble is, very few are prepared to take a chance, but where you do get more variety of music, you get far more satisfied listeners!.
And watch out for shows on some stations which ARE freeplay, because the presenter is fronting what is called a 'specialist' show!.
I present at weekends on a small commercial station in Scotland called Your Radio, and I have a freeplay show called The Vinyl Frontier, in which I play exclusively music from the 60s and 70s for three hours on a Sunday evening (the presenter who follows me also has a couple of hours freeplay across ALL the decades!)!. You can find out more about either the station - www!.yourradiofm!.com or the show www!.thevinylfrontier!.net - and the station can be heard on-line
Basically, re-tune your radio dial until you hear what you want to listen to!. It's out there somewhere!Www@Enter-QA@Com

they dont always have a choice, they cant just play any old song because they have to have the rights to play it!.

Normally this takes money, thats why some stations have annoying adverts but a mixture in songs and some stations (like radio 1) have no adverts but they have to play the same songs over and over!.

There is a set playlist as far as the air-play!. However, there
are usually more than a couple categories these fall in!.
1!. Hot
2!. Recurrent
3!. Oldies
Sharp programmers will realize when it is time
to move a particular song from "Hot" to "Recurrent"
so it gets played a lot less & "Oldies" even more
infrequently!. This way the music will not get so
stale so soon!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Yep, I love my local radio breakfast show mainly for the DJs as they have great personalities they are good to listen to!. But some of the songs they keep playing are really getting on my nerves!. It's weird but I find myself listening to the chat and switching over when the songs come on lolWww@Enter-QA@Com
