Why do they input the mechanical laughs on prime-time television shows?!

Question:

Why do they input the mechanical laughs on prime-time television shows?

Is it to let the audience know when to laugh or when the funny part comes? Or is it part a a big weird consipiracy to make everyone go crazy? Also, sometimes I find myself feeling kinda "uncool" when the mechanical audience laughs but I don't find that specific part funny... so sometimes I laugh anyway because the mechanical audience is laughing at it. But I still don't find that part funny. What do I do? Laguh with 'them' or don't laugh and find it kinda weird?

It makes me feel kind of left out when everyone else is laughing at the joke but I'm not....then you think about it again, and realize they are mechinical people. Then it feels like the show is so tacky...

Then it feels like the show is so tacky... They put the canned laughter in there to make people think there is a studio audience that thinks it is funny.

The Fox News Half Hour Comedy Hour used canned laughter but the show was not even the slightest bit funny.
