Remember STUMP THE BAND on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson?!

Question: Didn't ppl just make up songs and pretend...or were they singing legit stuff?

I played Stump the Band with Johnny in NYC a long time ago. I was visiting a girlfriend in NYC - we were about 19 years old - and we went on a tour of NBC. That's before tight security. We met a guy from Johnny's show and he took us to The Tonight Show office and asked if we wanted to play stump the band that night. We went back about 3 in the afternoon and they told us where to sit and we sang a song that my friends little niece sang all the time in kindergarten. The band didn't guess it and we got dinner for 2 and Johnny's book, Happiness Is A Dry Martini, autographed by him. What a thrill. THe book is still setting on my bookcase.

  • I think MOST OF IT was real. There might have been a few things made up to liven things up when stuff was "dying."

Wow, yes I do. It did sound like they were making them up.

A lot of folks sang songs that they learned in summer camp. And some folks sang REALLY OLD songs. David Letterman still does 'Stump the Band" with Paul and the guys occasionally
