Question: Boondocks on Adult Swim is one of the best shows on TV.

The square D.A. named "Tom" of all things is funny.
Granpa Freeman often gets the best lines.
The portrayal of W and Rummy as spoiled violent wannabes is spot on!
But Uncle Ruckus!?! I realize this is comedy and thus it uses broad brush strokes. But is this subservient, insane, old fool supposed to be funny or sad or both.
I don't get it. And yes, I'm white but I still don't see why I don't get Uncle Ruckus.

uncle ruckus is a play on the uncle remus (uncle tom) character(s) from early american books, television and film. this was the archetype for older black men as faithful servants and created images like the one still used for uncle ben's rice.
Haha! I think Uncle Ruckus is hilarious cuz he can't stand black folks, even tho he's the darkest one on the show! And he claims he was white, but he has revitiligo, the opposite disease of what Michael Jackson got! lol. Uncle Ruckus is a hella crazy old fool, but doesn't he make the show a hell of alot funnier?

he is the equivalent to the court jester. a caricature of minority self loathing and insecurity. and we all have a politically incorrect relative or someone we know like that... who just says any d@m thing.
I think Uncle Ruckus also plays better if you've met one. I've met someone like that. He's not nearly over the top like Uncle Ruckus, but he's definitely one to avoid other African-Americans he does not know.
He refuses to live in a "black neighborhood" (as he puts it). The only malls he'll shop at are "white malls." And as he has put it very clearly "Black people I don't know scare the f*** out of me." An odd bit of racism, as if being around whites is any less dangerous. But there it is.
Anyhow, while he's not nearly as bad as Uncle Ruckus, he is Ruckus-like. So anytime Uncle Ruckus starts acting up, I think of my coworker.
