The Biggest Loser Recap: Digging Deeper
After pulling big numbers the week before, my Black Team had me worried that they were going to suffer the rebound this week — so I worked them to the bone. Here's how the week went:
Trust Issues: After Jackie was sent home last week, her son Dan had a pretty big beef with the other members of the Blue Team. Jackie and Dan had made a pact with Mark and Jay not to vote each other off, so when the brothers turned around and ousted Jackie, Dan understandably felt stabbed in the back. Things were tense at first, but in the interest of staying in the game, Dan reached out to his teammates, and soon they were all on the same page again.

A Balancing Act: In this week's challenge, each team had to pick two couples to stand on balance beams suspended over a cold lake. On a pulley between each pair hung a weight equivalent to what they had lost so far on Campus. The last team left holding their weight without dropping it or falling into the water would win immunity for two players of their choice — one on their team and one on the opposing team. As the Biggest Loser of the preceding week, Bernie had hiked to the top of the hill, chosen the Gameplay card, and won the prize of only having to hold up half his pair's weight during the challenge. With this leg up, my Black Team made it look easy, and both Blue pairs hit the water before we even broke a sweat. To avoid stirring up any hard feelings among my players, I had them choose their own immunity recipient out of a hat, and Maggie got the honors. For the Blue Team, they gave immunity to Jay, since he'd been putting up the smallest numbers among his crew.

The Heart of the Matter: When people are carrying as much extra weight as these contestants are, chances are it's NOT just food that got them there. Nearly every time I help people dig deeper and ask themselves WHY they are overweight, it turns out there's some emotional issue that they're using food to cover up or cope with. I know that to keep the weight off for life, people have to really deal with their issues — which is why I brought in the ONLY person I trust to help my Black Team: my mom. As I said on the show, she is to psychotherapy what I am to fitness training, and she was able to help the players pinpoint what they need to work on. For some of them, it was powerful stuff.

Taking One for the Team: At the weigh-in, my Black Team pulled off another victory — this time by just ONE POUND. Amazing. It was an emotional elimination for the Blue Team and proved that yes, big boys do cry. Before the vote, Trent offered to take the hit, explaining that he wasn't in this game for the money — he was in it to change his life and get healthy for his family. Having laid the groundwork, he was okay with leaving Campus. His teammates had a hard time sending such a dedicated and gracious player home, but ultimately they felt it was the best move for the team. Today, Trent has lost a total of 112 pounds, and he's psyched to be back home with his wife and newborn son.

After the elimination, Alison dropped a bomb on the remaining players: Next week, they would ALL be sent home to see how they fared on their own. Be sure to tune in next Tuesday to see how THAT works out
