Why are the adverts louder than the programmes they interupt?!

Question: Why are the adverts louder than the programmes they interupt!?
Answers:
By law, Ads are allowed to be as loud as the loudest part of the show that they interupt!. They choose to be as loud as possible so that people will respond to the Ad (aka, buy the product, etc!.)!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

They can't actualy be louder, they just seem it and here is why!. Imagine a scale of 0-8 Nothing can be louder than an 8!. A normal programme might have conversation averaging 3-4 with peaks of 8 (like gun shots) Music might be in the background averaging say 2!. Adverts on the other hand while still having a peak of 8 might have an average of 6 Most sound is pushed to the maximum, voice and music will peak at 8!. Adverts do not peak more loudly, but average higher for maximum impact!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Elini
Exactly the same here, he moans like hell, but if I turn it down then I can't hear when the programme comes back on so I have to be ready with the remote for the adverts!.
But when I drop off watching I get woken every time the ads come on, it's so bloody annoying!.
When the kids were little they used to have naps on the sofa and I used to have the TV on mute and guess what was going on as they always woke up in a state of shock!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

OMG yes - that is sooooooooooo annoying!. Some programmes are so quiet you have to turn them up and then BLAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH BLAAAAAAAH the adverts come on talking about all sorts of rubbish!. It must be an advertising gimic to make you wake up if you fall asleep in the middle of a really boring film or something :-)Www@Enter-QA@Com

In the UK they are allowed to have them a bit louder!. I agree, they should not be allowed!. I emailed Channel 4 to ask why they allow it and they just said they are within the acceptable level!. Some channels are worse than others!. Best thing to do is mute them, it gives you a bit of peace and if enough people do it, they will have to change their policy!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

LOL!!!! I try to watch telly in bed while my hubby is sleeping, it goes loud at the ads and if I don't catch them in time he wakes up and says it's me playing with the volume button! but it's the ad's that wake him up! He tells me I am talking P!SH I will show him this, he says I turn it up! Thank you, your Q has saved a big silly row XXXWww@Enter-QA@Com

It is actually meant to be illegal to do that but when asked they told me that they take the loudest moment in a tv show and the adverts are at that level!. It is to get your attention, all it does to me is annoy me lolWww@Enter-QA@Com

I believe that they do it to get you very angry-lol! No, it is so you don't miss the commercial!. They haven't realized that it only irritates the people who are watching and the people who are watching usually press the mute button!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Reasons given by the others are generally correct - one way to deal with it is to record the programme on a PVR (such as Sky+), start watching from the beginning about 10 minutes later, then skip the adverts altogether!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Believe it or not it isn't actually louder, it is just being broadcast on more frequencies so it seems louder!. This is obviously to get attention!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The purpose of the higher volumn during TV ads is to attact our attention in case we've dozed off!.

Anyone caught sleeping will be shouted at!Www@Enter-QA@Com

I completly agree its a nightmare, especially if you have just walked out of the room when the programme you were watching has finished, i gotta run back in and grab the remote!.!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

to wake you up so you take notice of them!. very annoying!.
thank god for remote controls - when i was a kid - i used to have to get up and down to turn the tv up/down, over etc!.!Www@Enter-QA@Com

They are "compressed"!. Really, it's that simple!. It's a technical process that lots of producers use to make records stand out more on radio so they "sound" louder but they really aren't!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The sound is compressed!. i!.e!. Everything is at it's loudest level unlike programmes where there is a greater dynamic range!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It's a pain in the butt/ I'm told the adverts are sorted and canned so they can be slotted in at the given time, surely they should be able to turn the can down!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

They want to get your attention and make you look, a lot like a child having a tantrum I guess!.

LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!

They attempt to do this by being as noisy as they can!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I have no idea but it has a negative effect in my house as we mute the telly every time the ads come on because they are unbearably loud, so we dont get the info they want to tell us!Www@Enter-QA@Com

i think that bird had the answer there but im just chipping in to add my complaint of how annoying that is!!!!!!!!!! grrrrWww@Enter-QA@Com

Thats a good point!.!.!.! I guess the sound goes to default once advert is activated !.!.im not sure!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Isn't it annoying!.If you don't have the remote handy, they'd blow
you off your seat!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
