The main theme running through season 1 of The Tudors was Henry's courting of Anne Boleyn!.
When season 1 begins, Henry is married to Catherine of Aragon but he has no son only a young daughter Mary!. He's bedding Bessie Blount and she discovers that she is pregnant and later gives birth to a boy named Henry Fitzroy - but he can't be Henry's heir because he's illegitimate!.
Then Henry takes Mary Boleyn as his mistress but soon gets tired of her and he spots Anne at a masked ball and is smitten instantly!. Anne's family is incredibly ambitious and they advise her not to sleep with the King as her sister did but to seduce him and keep him interested long enough to advance the Boleyn's social and political ambitions!.
Henry falls completely in love with Anne and spends much of season one trying to rid himself of Katherine of Aragon but the Church won't agree to it because Katherine of Aragon's nephew Phillip is the King of Spain and the most powerful man in Europe and has control over the papal authority in the Italian city states!. So the Pope can't risk annoying Phillip II and refuses to grant Henry an annulment!.
By the end of season one, Henry has decided to break away from the Church in Rome and have himself declared Head of the Church in England!. Cardinal Wolsey - who spent most of season one trying to manipulate the Church into agreeing to Henry's annulment - is arrested on Henry's orders and loses all his money, property, wealth and power and while imprisoned he commits suicide!. Katherine of Aragon has been banished from Court and Anne is Queen in all but name!.
