Why don't people watch SOAPS any more...???!

Question: Why don't people watch SOAPS any more!.!.!.!?!?!?
Look at these TV Ratings for the past 50 years!.!.!.

http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/List_of_US_!.!.!.

Notice how today's #1 Soap "Y&R" has a 3!.8 rating, less than four million viewers per today - but just ten years ago, its ratings were double that!.

What has happened to the Soap audience!?!?!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Not one person mentioned one of the biggest reasons!.The O!.J!. Simpson trial that was televised for a year pre empted the soaps, except the 3pm ones, since they were during the courts lunch break Pacific time!.Daytime never recovered from this and viewership fell by half!.Many people that had watched before realized after a yr!. without, they could do without!.It was a devestating blow to daytime!.It never should have been broadcast on network t!.v It should have been on CNN and Court T!.V!. only!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

There's still an audience for soaps, there just aren't many real soaps left for that audience!. Back when soaps were at their peak, they were something that got passed down from grandparent to parent to child!. That's always been the main source of new viewers -- people who grew up watching these "stories" tended to keep watching, and then their children would grow up watching, et cetera, et cetera!.

As ratings soared primarily among older people, network executives got greedy and wanted to target the 18-to-35 set, which is seen as the golden goose in the entertainment industry!. They started meddling with the way soaps are run, installing producers and writers who really don't know or respect the genre (see: Brian Frons, Bob Guza) in effort to attract younger viewers, but all that ended up doing was driving away the audience they already had!. When the older folks stopped watching, there was no one to pass it on to the younger generations, and in the age of cable and internet not a lot of people are going to watch network TV in the middle of the day on their own!.

The network execs, as I said, have no idea how the soap genre works!. They blame the audience for changing, they say that people today just aren't interested, but that isn't true!. The fact, cliche'd though it may be, is that they just don't make 'em like they used to!. They just keep shuffling the same group of bad writers from soap to soap, instead of bringing in new people who actually watch the show they write for!. At this point, I honestly think the big bosses are just waiting for an excuse to take soaps off the air altogether and replace them with cheaper reality shows!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think people still do watch it, but don't watch it during the day when it's first on because it's mostly baby boomers that watch them and now most of us are all grown up and have a job and a family to take care of first before we can sit and watch it!.
I think most people watch now on the Internet, their DVRs or on Soapnet, and I don't think that any of those are counted when they figure out the ratings!.

I think alot of people have become disillusioned with soaps in general because most, not all, have gone to a more real, true to life situations and people just don't like that!. They like fantasy worlds, where everyone is rich, beautiful and in love and when it comes to dealing with day-to-day situations, they don't like it because they have enough of that with their own lives already!.

My favorite soap is Guiding Light and has been for 25 years!. I know there are several people here on Y!A that hate it because they changed the filming style, gone to hand held cameras in an outdoor *real* town setting!.!.!.!.rather than shooting inside a studio with only a few sets to choose from!. They have been turned off by some of the actors/actresses becoming older and not so svelte anymore!.!.!.!.!.the comments I have read from some of the GL haters!.!.!.!.well, they're downright pathetic really!.!.!.!.!.talking about a woman thats been on a show for 25 years and why she doesn't look like she used to!.!.!.!.Hello!? Time!.!.!.!.people age!.!.!.they get heavier!.!.!.!.!.who knows what!.!.!.!.

I remember way back when, when I had money to spend on things like Soap Opera Digest, I always paid attention to the ratings listed!.!.!.and Y&R was always #1 with like 10 or 11 million viewers!.!.!.to see now that they're down to 3!.8!.!.!.!.well!.!.!.!.!.it most likely has to do with the economy and there just aren't that many people sitting in front of the tv watching the soaps!.!.!.they're out working, trying put food on the table and gas in their gas tanks!.!.!.!.ya know!? Its a shame!.!.!.!.

I will always watch GL!.!.!.as long as its on the air (thank God for DVR!)Www@Enter-QA@Com

Personally, I don't have time to watch!. I'm going back to work - just part time- but I've got a full plate!. I want to be able to carry on an intelligent conversation and just watching Tv all day - especially Soaps doesn't allow for that!. People don't know culture, arts, music, English, etc!. They know Tv and staying home watching kids!. That's not for me!. I want to grow and expand my thinking and give back to the community and learn and travel more!. I'll be cutting waaaay back on Tv!. Two reasons:
1!. There is a stigma about watching soaps!. People make fun of people who watch soaps!.
2!. People are just busier now and a lot more women (the main watchers of soaps) are working during the days!. I myself use to have 3 soaps that I use to watch and now only have time for one :(
Www@Enter-QA@Com

They repeat the same storyline over again!. For instance, who's the baby's daddy, love triangles, swapping partners, numerous marriages, villian always up to something etc!. It just never ends in soap world!. Plus, soaps tend to get a little boring sometimes!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think some people just get broed with them but even when they are not on their game, I love them!. I like them b/c we get new episodes 5 days a week and they go on and on!. I get so frustrated with primetime b/c so many of them get cancelled just as you get into them!. Soaps last forever!Www@Enter-QA@Com

the story lines are getting a bit ridiculous!. When you have the same actors on the show for 20-35 years, it gets difficult to come up with a plausible story line!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

Those used to be the "big thing!." But now there's bigger and better out there!. No one wants to see the repeated, cliched, sometimes pathetic story lines anymore!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Those shows are stressful and if you watch them to much you tend to think in a dramatic state of mind excepting a soap opera outcome!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

I only watch Y&R!.

I guess the "Soap" audience just "grew up" and "grew out of it"Www@Enter-QA@Com

I watch soap all the time if I miss them in the daytime I watch them on the soap net at nigth!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

they are getting tired of repeating storylines I guess!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

I don't know, but Y&R is my favorite, and I record it everyday!Www@Enter-QA@Com

I watch Days of Our Lives!. As a pastor, I get lots of sermon ideas!

!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

because the writing on some of our favorite shows is complete trash and some of the characters are complete fools!.!.!.at least that's why I don't watch Y&R anymoreWww@Enter-QA@Com

<> were still here !.!.!. just using our DVR boxes to watch and maybe they don't get into the ratings!?!?!? Trust me>>> we are out there!

but this was a great web pageWww@Enter-QA@Com

idk!. I was a watcher of Y&R then, and I'm still at it!
