On January 20, 1982, at a concert in Des Moines, a bat wound up on stage, which had either been stuck in the rafters or thrown up there by a crazed fan. Osbourne bit it for a goof, thinking it was a rubber toy. He had to take a week of rabies shots. Despite a $25,000 donation later that year to the SPCA, the bat story grew to be an urban legend of its own, to the point where even numerous unrelated heavy metal bands were commonly accused of ritualistically killing live animals on stage.

Yes, he really did, but he didn't mean to. He would bit the heads off of plastic bats as part of his gimmick, but a fan threw a real dead bat on stage once. Ozzy couldn't tell the difference and...oops.
yeah, he bit the head off of a dove because his show was sucking, and he has repeated the stunt since with bats. it actually happened.
it was at a concert. and he really did! i saw it on tv a while ago when they were doing some biography on ozzy. it was so DISGUSTING and sad. poor little bat :(
My husband told me that Ozzy thought it was a toy bat. He says that it wasn't supposed to be real.

Basicly, he was at a gig, and someone threw him a dead bat, and he thought it was a plastic one so he bit its head off and threw it to the crowd who ripped it appart; ever since then it became a kind of thing for people to kill animals at his sets. He said this in an interview.

In his defense, he thought it was a fake bat. He started to bite it and then spit it out when he realized it was real. He had to have daily rabies shots as a precaution.
