Original Video Animation. It can also be OAV, with animation and video switched. An OVA is usually a straight to video release, something that follows up where the TV series left off(continuing the story from the manga), or can be just how the animated version is released(because of content for instance). In some cases, such as the anime Mahou Tsukai Tai, the OVA can come first, then be followed up by a TV series.
In the case of Fushigi Yuugi (my favourite anime and manga), there is the TV series(episodes 1-52) that follows part one of the manga(volumes 1-13). OVA 1(3 episodes) was made to bridge the gap that was created between the TV series and the OVA 2(6 episodes) which covers part 2 of the manga(volumes 14-18) because in the TV series they changed Miaka's last wish from what it was in the manga. OVA 3(4 episodes) is based on one(two, technically) of the novels that were written by Nishizaki Megumi of the same name, Eikoden. Eikoden, unlike the other novels that focus on particular characters and their pasts(or in Hotohori's case, past and when he wasn't with them in Hokkan and Sairou), Eikoden is a sequel to the story.
