I certainly enjoy anime, and can admit I think the boys in it are cute (Well, drawn to be cute), but I do know people who are literally in love with characters!.
As for being real, story lines can get very in-depth and complicated, which is why they can feel so real!. Some are actually set up to feel real, usually by including a school or home setting parallel to the fantasy/ action setting!.
When it comes to anime/ manga, the term "love" amongst fans can be used very loosely!. They may not "love" the characters, but use that term to describe how they admire that character, and how much that they like that character as just that, a character!. For example, I "love" Juushiro from the anime Bleach, but I don't love him romantically, I "love" him in my admiration of his strength and confidence!. It's like when you say you "love" a friend, you don't love them romantically (Even though you may, in some cases), but instead love their company and compassion!.
I appreciate you coming here and asking this question before insulting them and making judgment based on what you heard them saying!. Too many anime fans are generalized that way!.

P!.S!. No, it does not pass by age 15!. The people that I'm talking about are 15!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Your spelling give me headache ?_?' typing like this give you a bad English grade :D I know because that's me :D I've already passed though, re-take -!.-' my second language

:D

I love Japanese culture and I'm not hardcore anime watcher, but I do love watch anime from time-to-time!. The reason I love watching anime shows is to kill sometime and I enjoy some of the great story teller!.

Not just anime, I love watching films, animation, shows etc!. That why I'm study Film Production right now in the University!.

I love digital art, I love art, love drawing :D Yeah, I love art that's one of the reason!.

I see, you don't understand the meaning behind the story tellers!. They aim to make a story come to life, make the story live on inside someone!. It is not just cartoon, it's the story!. Well, to me its the story but for someone else might be different!.

Like some other answer said before me, my girl friend also think some of the characters design are cute!. That's one of the reason she enjoy watching them -!.-' I think it is cool, I don't mind

People have many different kind of hobby so I think it is rude to call them strange people!. Its ok, you still have time to grow up!. You can grow up anytime soon!.

Anime has continuous plot and story which most american shows lack!. I'm guessing you're in 7th, 8th grade!. That's when fangirls stop popping up and obsessing over certain characters!. That will pass by the time they're 15 or so!.
Anime has a large variety of art styles, plots, genres so it appeals to everyone due to different tastes and styles!.

Edit: Than the people in your school need to discover yaoi!.

Edit: I really have to explain!? Fine!. Most fangirls start being fangirls around 12, 13!. They love a character obsess, ect!. (Think Twilight and Eward fangirls now for a more american example!.) Around age 14, 15, most girls into anime learn about yaoi and instead of being regular fangirls, they become yaoi fangirls!. Instead of obsessing over a charcater and wanting them for themselves, girls will then want that character to be with another character!. And because it's yaoi, both thoes characters are guys!. It's a common evolution for younger female anime fans!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

My boyfriend is into it, there is a few shows that he enjoys watching!.!.!. I Think what attracts him to is the whole Japanese culture!. I have not been interested in the shows but I am attracted to the art of it I guess you can say!.!.!. I love drawing Anime =] They have such interesting looks, i like the style that the women have!. The way they have those very big expressive eyes are very cool lol you must think I'm weird!. It's just the whole art thing of it I guess, I love art! =]Www@Enter-QA@Com

They are able to connect with the characters and they become friends to them!. It is more than mere ink-and-paint, but the success of turning them into flesh-and-blood!.

Some are attracted because of the story, others for the fan service!. In any case, anime is far more daring and challenging than US animationWww@Enter-QA@Com

Personally, I have never been in love with a character, but what people like most about anime and manga, are the plots whether it's shojo, shonen, shojo-ai or shonen-ai!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

NOTICE: These are not my words, but this is the best description I know of to describe what I want to say!.

The word "anime", contrary to popular belief, is not the Japanese word for animation!. Though the word is used in Japan to describe animation, it is actually derived from a French word!. Anime in the U!.S!. refers specifically to Japanese animation, which in and of itself is a unique style of storytelling and film making!. In the United States, where animation and film are separated mediums, in Japan they are one in the same!. The cinematography and further elements of professional film making are all used in the animated films that are created in Japan!. Unlike the United States, which is due to the public perception that animation is for children (the reason for this is an essay in and of itself), anime in Japan is made for all types of audiences including children, adolescents, and adults!. There are categories of anime and manga (Japanese comic) for girls, boys, young girls, young boys, adolescent boys, and adolescent girls, conservative adults, non-conservative adults and so on!. The subjects of anime range from history (past and future), to fantasy, dramatic, science fiction, popular culture, cyber-reality, adult, action, romance, political, and more!.

In other words, for every category that there is for live action films, there is one for anime!.

One of the MAJOR differences between anime and U!.S!. animation is the quality of storytelling and level of understanding at which the story develops!. Though things are changing in the U!.S!., the majority of animation is geared at young minds and actually are almost insulting to those young minds in the treatment of the story!. Anime expands upon the regions once only explored by live action films, by incorporating heavy themes of drama, powerful emotional conflicts and character development and relationships!. In certain types of anime people do die, and people do suffer from those losses!. In certain types of anime there is great violence, rape, and brutality, corruption and realism!. In certain types of anime there is sex, twisted perceptions of pleasure and pain, mixtures of fantasies and hellish retribution!. In certain types of anime there is love and loss, great struggle and moving passion, realizations of ones self worth and commitment to the family structure!. There are powerful women heroines who stand on their own without the aid of muscle bound men!. There are feeble men who collapse under pressure and show their fear, passion, and vulnerabilities!. There are heavy religious connotations, powerful speeches about humanity, the future of technology, and politics!. All of these elements and more can be found wrapped up in some of the most amazingly artistic, detailed, and revolutionary animation ever seen!.

In many ways anime is also a state of mind; a state of understanding that many Americans have trouble getting to!. The realization that animation is an acceptable medium for dramatic story telling and not something meant only for children and political satire, is a concept that the American public may never reach which is the one of the main reasons why anime has not struck powerfully in the U!.S!. The other main reason is that the media has a twisted perception of Japanese animation, believing that it is all sex and violence (the opposite of the wholesome children's animation of the United States) and hasn't expanded its reach into the truth about this wonderful realm of animation!. It is these misinformed perceptions and lack of cooperation amongst anime fans that have kept anime very much an underground genre!.

What it comes down to is this!. See it!. All of it!. Not just the sex and the violence!. Not just the science fiction and the sword and sorcery!. Not just the heavy drama or historical accounts!. See it all!. Experience it all as much as you can in both subtitled and dubbed format!. Experience the Japanese language and the English adaptations!. That is the only way for you to know what anime is all about!.!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
