Holding Guitar right?!

Question: I am starting to learn electric (after learning classical) -- and I was told to hold my guitar with my thumb not going over the neck. I have read on numerous websites that it is actually the best way to stick ur thumb out, also every famous electric guitar player does it. So what is the best way to learn it?

I teach my students that both thumb positions are useful. It depends on what you are playing.

If you are playing a lot of notes on low strings then you will probably find it easier to play if you keep your thumb from going over the neck.

If you are doing a lot of bending it often helps to hook your thumb around the edge of the neck to get some extra leverage.

You can use your thumb to fret notes on the 6th string too. For example, when playing a 6-string bar chord you could use your thumb for the low note. This frees up your fingers to do other things.

Personally, I probably spend most of the time with my thumb going over the neck, only moving below the edge of the neck to play low passages.

Hope this helps.

ive been playing for 4 years and although i prefere bass princible is the same. The most important thing about playing any instrument is to play it to your comfort so try holding it diffrent ways. you will eventually get your own style of playing. Same goes when you decide to buy a new guitar, comfort is very important.
