Do I need to obtain permission to use copyrighted music for my short film? If s!
Question:
Do I need to obtain permission to use copyrighted music for my short film? If so, how do I get permission?
I am planning on using the music in my short film, which I would want to show at public screenings and film festivals. There is no profit to be made, there is no prize money. I was wondering if I would still need to obtain permission. If I do have to get permission, how would I go about getting it? Thanks!!!
Answers:
Absolutely. You not only need a contractual agreement but you may also need to pay play money to the artist(s) -- at the least, some form of royalty payment, which would be spelled out in detail in the contract.
Contact the recording company that released a particular piece you want to use. The artist(s) sign a contract with the recording company that governs royalties and rights. You may also want to go to this site for more information on royalties and rights in the music business:

Sorry, that's the way it is....
