The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)
The Ring
Exorcist
House of 1000 Corpses, followed by The Devils Rejects. They are both scary but really funny too.
Halloween series
Night of the Living Dead. The original B&W version was the scariest thing I ever saw!
White Noise
The Exorcist, The Blair Witch Project, Carrie, Rosemary's Baby (older but really scary), The Shining
Saw 1/2/3
I shat a brick when i watched those movies. I aint watching the 4th one ill tell you that. Its a UK 18 and US R though, go with Saw trust me. It may be scary and extremely gory, but its pretty good.
Not knowing your taste in movies, it's a little difficult to recommend. But I'll use your "scary" request and tell you about these:
"Rosemary's Baby" is one of the scariest movies ever made. "The Exorcist" is the quenticential scary movie. The original "Halloween" is a slasher but very frightening experience. I thought "The Ring" was very creepy. Even "The Blair Witch Project" raised the hair on my neck a few times. "Psycho" is a disturbing experience. "The Sixth Sense" is a good one for most of the family to enjoy and has a very surprise ending. For endless gore, watch "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (the original). There are too many to go through, but these will stand out forever as some of the scariest films ever made.
