The machine made a copy of him every time - like the hats, or the cats, in Tesla's woods in Colorado. As he appeared on the balcony, the clone fell through the stage into a tank and drowned. (Which we see at the beginning and is what Borden is executed for.)
Angier performed the show many times - I believe it was going to be 100 performances, although he didn't get to do all of them. This was why he had blind stage hands - they took away the corpse in the tank each night without looking at it. The warehouse at the end is filled with all the tanks - scores of dead Angier clones in water tanks.

The machine with all the electric lighting, cloned him. Just like the scene with all the top hats and all the black cats. Remeber when all the blind guys where loading the cart. That was the water tank with H. Jackman character.
Everytime that Algiers used Tesla's machine, there was a copy of himself made. The copy was transported in the balcony of the theatre and presented himself to the audience, while the original fell through the trap door in the stage, got locked in a tank, and drowned.
He was cloned every time he stepped in the machine just like the cat and the hat. (No pun intended) I thought it was pretty interesting that after his wife died he tried to drown himself, and ironically that's exactly what he was doing each night that he preformed that particular trick. It was sort of a mentally sick and twisted way of remembering her.
