Film night ideas - I need two contrasting suggestions?!
Question: Me and my media studies friends are hosting film night and I need some suggestions for two films that are similar, yet different. They need a tenuous link somehow?
The idea is to show the two films and then discuss...
So far we have had;
Airplane! and Alive
Free Willy and Moby Dick
Rambo and Dumbo (get the idea?)

Paper Moon
and
Matchstick Men
both are about Con Artists who get there daughter involved with their conning. One takes place during the depression, MM is modern. They're both awesome
fail safe and dr. strangelove, same source material, drama vs. comedy
One missed call (japanese version)
The Eye (japanese version)
very good movies :D
How about "War Games" and "Dr. Strangelove." Both are about impending nuclear disasters that need to be averted.
Since you already have Airplane! on the list, I'd suggest Airplane! and Zero Hour (you might have some trouble finding Zero Hour, though.)
Hm. How 'bout "The King of Kings" (Jeffrey Hunter plays a mean Jesus), and "The Exorcist"?
how about:
"Kingdom of heaven" and "Thy kingdom come"
"Aviator" and "Cinderella Man" << more of an abstract same meaning deal here
"Dead man walking" and "In cold blood"
"Braveheart" and "Legend of the falls"
"Independence day" and "Day after tomorow"
"Platoon" and "Saving private ryan"
lord of the rings and chronicals of narnia c s lewis and j r r tolkein wrote the books at the same time so are influential on each other
Punisher(2004) and The Brave One(2007)
Two very good movies with a lot of similarities but yet very distinct differences. They're fighting for the same thing but in different situations.
Punisher starring Thomas Jane and John Travolta.
The Brave One starring Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard.
-Brokeback Mountain- and -Fight Club-
Men and their emotions.
Casablanca and The English Patient. Set at the same time, they show how war and romance have/have not changed in filmmaking and society.
"Fitzcarraldo" and "Sahara"- they are two tales of obsession.
