What makes an artist mainstream?!

I think an artist becomes mainstream when they have that crossover audience...Pretty much becoming pop...I think that most ppl start to dislike them because they feel that they are tryn to sell records...which makes their normal way of rapping change...It happend to Common after the Chocolate/Water album...Then he had to come back down to earth a lil bit...But some ppl just hate the fact that a broader audience is listening and most times not all the artist start to water their music down...but it does change in some form after they become mainstream
Starts at the record execs. money splurge of certain artists, then the local radio stations, dj's then play it more then others because of the push from the top position, people hear it so many times that it's subliminally installed in there heads, then the people start to request it, and that's the viscous cycle of a mainstream artist.
An artist is mainstream when they become sellouts and get they're songs played way too much on the radio. Mainsteam artists make it so that real rappers can't get their music on the radio.
When an "artist" is so wrapped up in doing whats popular and accommodating the quantity they loose their quality and dont seem to remember where they came from.

I would say any artist that gets tons of radio airplay is "mainstream" whether they're hip-hop/R&B/pop/rock whatever.
You're "underground" if you don't get any (or much) radio airplay. Simple as that.....
Common?? mainstream?? NEVER mainstream those that conform they're stuff (can't be called music) is a regurgitated attempt of replicating original wonders of music made by those so talented we still playing their songs years later.
