You're right, it is CHERT.
Chert is a sedimentary rock formed by chemical processes. Frequently found in the presence of limestone (which there is alot of in the south-its what makes Tennessee whiskey good!)
Both are formed in the sea, but I can't remember whether deep or shallow.
