Why do Heavy Metallers and Goths glorify Drinking and Drugs?!

Question: Most are not real hellraisers, its all an IMAGE for most of them! Most are very conservative and conformist. No sleep till BEDTIME! On all CD's its thanks for the beer, this pub that pub! In the Metal publications they gloryfy drink and drugs to young people! This is bad! Do they not know alcoholism is as bad for people as their music can be good for them?

Hey i play! and i drink beer! But i always separate the two. I will never write a good ol' crunchy guitar riff song...about beer, that's just cheesy. I think a lot of it is corporate "Back Scratching" if you ask me. Some band gets tour support (money) from a booze company, so they HAVE to list the company on the album credit "Thank you's" list, and well...i bet they get free booze from said company. I dunno , i don't think about it too much. Hey , if you need some words of encouragement to kick your thing , hit me up. i've been there (drugs) and done that - "done" meaning eight years off the crap. My album credits in the past would have read something like:

Vinster proudly uses and endorses:

Ibanez guitars
Charvel / Jackson guitars
Peavey Amplification
Joe the Meth Dealer

LOL!

Because what else is there to do in your free time?

That's a stereotype, listen to rap, ska, punk, anything and you'll find similar lyrics. People will or won't be alcoholics based on their personal decisions, not on the lyrics of their music.

Not many bands glorify drugs or alchohol, they mostly sing about their bad experiences with drugs and achohol.

I don't drink or smoke, i like metal...

why do rappers glorify drugs, drinking, excess and objectification of women? who knows... but please don't stereotype...

It's an image thing. Metal and goth emerged as countercultural forces, expressing currents of emotion that go against the direction that most of our culture tells us we should go or feel. A person doesn't need to drink or do drugs in order to be anti-materialist or anti-corruption for example, but it's like a badge they can wear to show that they do in fact do what they want to instead of what they're told to; that they make their own rules. If they're honest, they'll at least sing of the ills of drug life and being washed up.

Its the same as teeny boppy pop singers sing abt prom nites, crushes and hypothetical situations......goths just drive energy from the dark side of life..its up to you how u forsee it....use it positively or negatively....

im sorry but i am a fello rocker, i love metal and all gothic imagery, yet i am quite confused by this, i dont know what you are talking about, heavy metallers dont gloryfi drugs or drink, i dunno where your getting this information from but its wrong, its just music anyway, if you dont like it dont listen to it, ps you dont comment on rap music where the singers are actually getting shot, but thats a different story i bet???

Well
I don't know quite where to start, complex issue You just raised.
I am a Metalhead and I will defend Metal to the Gates Of ---- but that doesn't mean You don't have a point.
In My 20's I was basically a dope fiend, my girlfriend of three years was a pill addict and I watched My best Friend slowly become a full blown alcoholic.
Why? Because We all wanted to live the "Party" lifestyle.
Well I am totally recovered now, so Is My Best Friend.
But My Girlfriend, the one I would have Married.
She's dead.
Because of drugs.
So I wouldn't glorify drugs to anyone or alcoholism.
Illegal Drugs Destroy Lives I Know.
So here is at least ONE Metaller who doesn't glorify it.
Thank You for asking a question which truly needs to be addressed.

Image thing?

It's no longer considered cool inside the music business to still be practicing what was once considered to be in vogue.

A lot of these guys may be 'puttin on the ritz' for their audience and fans but behind the scenes, they've straightend their stuff up.

i'm with suzette on this one. i listen to the same music but you know what? i dont drink to excess in fact i hardly every go out on the lash and listening to their music doesnt make me want to rush out and drink and do drugs. its called freewill. you will not become an alcoholic or a junkie just from listening to music, and if people blame their problems on music then they need a reality check badly and face up to the real reason why they abuse drink and drugs.

Whatever, country music is all about all jacked up and its 5:00 somewhere and i love this bar. You got snoop dog promotin the weed and cypress hill with there mary jane posters, just because metal promotes the "good stuff" don't blame it on metal. Do you not have any self control? Just because Ozzy bit the head off a bat doesnt mean I'm gonna!

holy hell.....how pathetic do you have to be to let music influence your life so much? for hells sake its just music.

this is almost the same as when loser emo kids say "my chemical romance saved my life!"

you gotta be pretty low to let these people be your role models. just try to treat it for what it is: it's just music.

i don't care what the musicians do in their free time. i love judas priest, and rob halford is gay. that doesn't mean i'm going to go have butt sex with some dude.

I think you might be confusing glorification with correlation. Also, what makes the Goths anymore guilty of drug abuse than Letters To Cleo? Sometimes looks are deceiving.

In this day in age, pretty much every song glorifys some sort of bad behavior whether is be drinking by the heavy metallers, or sex and drugs by the rap fans.

I love heavy metal and do not drink or smoke.

this answer is easy, because most of them are on drugs and alchohol, infact most celebrities in general are drunk or high most of their days,

and i'll say this, i like my rock stars strung out on smack, look how bad bands like van halen, aerosmith, rolling stones and many many more are when they get clean and sober,

i want my poloticians and cops clean straight and trust worthy, but i want my rock stars 2cc shy of an overdose

Actually, most genuine metalheads I know are quite straight living. And you say this as if there aren't at least 10 other genres that influence people in a much worse way...

Well go listen to Britney Spears or Nsuck then.Or the backside boys. You think raps any better. All rap talks about is killing police, raping hoes, and doing drugs. And they call each other racist names but God forbid a white person use those words!

Ever heard of the saying 'Sex,drugs&rock'n'roll'?Well, it sells!!Rock artists have to portray the bad guy image. It sells.Anyway,in many bands this image is genuine...only the older bands have become sober.(Metallica for example)

Honestly,I prefer my bands to be drunk and high! They sound way better

Because thats what rockers do. Think about a heavy metal rocker who doesnt do that. John 5, the guitarist for Rob Zombie/former Marilyn Manson, and hes a pretty weird dude.

its not just metal goth and rock that do drugs and drink
Ive never heard anyone saying THANKS FOR THE BEER!!! Blackstone cherry(i know they arent heavy metal or goth) dont drink.

rap music USED TO(they are trying to change that) refer women as b*tches and hoes and degrade women. THATS NOT BAD???????????????????? come on you gotta get your facts straight before you make a question.

There are a couple country songs too that talk about drinking and drugs.
ALL JACKED UP, that one song that talks about smoking marijuana in Tiawana.

I consider my self a metal head, I listen to band like all that remains, killswitch engage, slayer, and so on and so forth, but to group both metal heads and goths together and say that a majority of us are drug and alcohol abusers is dumb and very stereotypical, i personally don't do drugs and i'm no alcoholic and most of my friends who also are metal heads don't either, and plus, rap is much more based upon drug, sex, and alcohol, metal is more about violence, destruction, and death.

Ok here we go,lets see-oasis,the verve,the beatles,charlatans
ride,stereophonics,coldplay,stoneroses... boys,rancid,
nofx,swervedriver,rolling stones,velvet underground,dylan,
amy winehouse, katie melua, all these artists have made
drug references in songs(or drink references). Its called
life mate, unfortunately drink and drugs are a big part of
everyday life in the modern world.

It's not just goths and metallers who glorify drink and drugs,i've read plenty of other musicians from other music genres doing the same thing.

because it makes us feel good.

also its something to do to **** u up

your blameing metal for you addiction. get the hell over it. im not denying that yeah, theres drinking and drugs in metal, but theres a lot of other stuff too. more often than not it ISNT glorified... i listen to metal every freaking day and i drink MAYBE once a month and no drug other than ibuprofen and tylenol has ever enterd my system. drinking is YOUR choice, not metals...if you dont like it, leave.

Metalheads and Goths for the most part do not glorify drinking and drugs.

I know where you're coming from but all the metallers I've known (myself included) aren't that bad.... but others seem to think we are. It's all image and, you're right, the magazines, videos etc. I just love the music and that's all that matters - what's the point of wasting money on buckets of booze? Less to spend on CDs then.

I get very annoyed with people blaming the music for problems - like that thing with Judas Priest lyrics a few years back. It seems like people need an excuse for their attitudes/problems etc - no one takes the blame themselves any more.
