I`m not 100% sure but they did use alot of over drive on both their guitars and bass, they also employed alot of overlaying and pinging, where you record all of the one type of instrument into x-amount of channels (generally with a different sound to each eg: clean, fuzzy,wah-wah, 12 string) then play them back into the one channel. They did generally try to keep it as raw as possible most times. Joe Strummer was a big fan of the Telecaster too so that contributed to their sound. Thats about as much as i can tell you...hope it helps....cheers.

Yeah, if you've watched any of Joe Strummer's recent performances you'll realise that he regularly performs cartwheels prior to setting his guitar on fire ala Hendrix. Gets the crowd going, and detracts from the music more importantly...
