if it has a open circle and a stewith a dot next to the big circle at the bottom, that means you hold it for 3 beats.
If it is a colored in circle with a dot next to her that means you hold it for 1 and a half.
-the little dot means that you hold it for half the value of the note before it plus the original value of the note-

If it has a bottom like this -> o <- plus a dot that is 3 beats
if it has a bottom like that except filled in you hold it for 1 1/2
beats.

It means the writer's pen was out of ink...;-)
it is either a whole or half note (with a stem) and the dot means time and a half. So a half note plus a dot would be 3 beats in 2/2 or 6 beats in 4/4 time
