How high should i expect to be able sing?!

Question: Im a 17 year old male and was just wondering how high i should i be able to sing to. At the moment i can sing comfortably from a G on a guitars lowest string to open E on the top. (The E is extremely forceful and wouldnt last long). At the moment i feel like i can't sing anything mainstream because its so high. With falsetto i can reach to 18th fret on the top E but its useless in rock singing which is what i enjoy. Anybody know? Anybody got any tips? :)

Hi there.

One of the most powerful ways to increase your full voice range especially for rock singing is to do sirens.

Here's how you do them. Start at the C below middle C (that's usually around a males speaking range) and slide up one octave in full voice using an ay-vowel. If you can do that and it feels good, go up one half-step to C# and again slide an octave and so on.

Keep doing this until you hit the limit for your day i.e. as high as you can go while things feel comfortable. Then go back down again, i.e. start going downwards on the notes again until you come back to your starting point.

Never push!! I can't stress this enough, only go as high as you can comfortably. Working out while pushing will cause you to ingrain the wrong muscle memory, and that is counterproductive. You can keep this in check by listening to yourself and your body. If you feel tension in your neck, jaw or the top of your head, it indicates that you need to back off.

Doing this will engrain the right muscle memory, and 3 weeks from now you won't believe how far you've come. Remember, perfect practice makes perfect.

If you want to, having a teacher check you out for a couple of lessons would be useful as well.

Good luck, I sing rock as well and I was in your shoes a couple of years ago. Trust me, the journey of learning to sing those high C:s is definitely worth it ;)

Good luck,
Ron

Everyone has different vocal ranges. What seems comfortable to you may be high or even low to many others.

Breath with your diaphram will increase your capacity to project notes better, so your high "e" will be much stronger. If you continue to practise, you may find you have a much higher vvocal range than expected.

Put your hand on your stomach, take a deep breath. You should be able to feel your stomach filling up with air. Keep practising until you find it.
