I'm starting voice lessons (I'm in my late teens)...?!

Question: Yesterday I heard my voice teacher demonstrating her singing to a voice major, and she hit the C two octaves above middle C. It was DEAFENING. I was even in a different room thirty feet away and it almost hurt my ears - it was that loud and opera-y!

I've only begun starting voices lessons, and in choir I am an alto. I can sing on pitch and have "decent" tone quality, as in not anything extraordinary, but enough for untrained people to comment that I have a good voice.

I was wondering - how long would it take me to learn to sing that loudly and high? My natural range is from the F below middle C to the F two octaves above middle C. Eventually, I would really like to sing opera, but my voice does not have vibrato and I cannot sing very loudly.

Is it true people are born with a certain voice and a set range? Would it ever be possible that an alto like me could sing coloratura soprano? I am willing to work very hard :)

There really aren't many true contraltos, so I'm willing to bet that your voice is actually more geared towards soprano. I have just about the same bottom range as you do, but I'm definitely a soprano. It took me a couple of semesters of voice lessons to get my voice to the point where it could easily reach the really high soprano notes, but I definitely got there. The voice is like any other muscle group; the more stretching and longterm work you put into working it, the better (and stronger) it will become.

You've just started your voice lessons, so I'm sure that you'll soon realize you have more of an upper range than you previously thought.

Bring these thoughts up with your voice teacher next time you meet. I'm sure she'll be able to give you good advice.

some people are givted with a great voice and need less practise but many can achieve having a great voice with practise and i think if u practise evryday on ur singing u can succed

The key to loud and sustaining is breath control..... Learn to hold your breath and learn to control it... That is what has worked for me...
Yes it is alsoe true that some people can carry a tune and others cannot.
Learn the fundamentals of music first before you worry about breaking a glass with your voice... Learn to sing a song "straight" before you pretend to be Whitney Houston adn statrt vocalizing all over the place.....
The voice is an insturment just like the trumpet and Clarinet... You have to learn to hear the right notes as will as play and sing them....

Keep up the work and good luck

well im in a choir and it took me a while to be able to sing at an opera levle all u can do is practice. using a piano and see if you can be louder than the piano. do regular warm ups and as the pitch goes higher bend ur knees, just ur knees back straight pretend that ur sting in an imaginary chair, to suport the sound and eventually u will get louder. hope this helps

i don't think people are born with a certain range, but they have a certain voice.

my voice has always been the same. but my range has increased alot in the past year. i started out with a one octave range but i did scales and stuff so now i can sing as high as hayley williams and mariah carey... so. yeah.
