American (from Grand Rapids, Michigan).
Ethnically, they're African-American (mother's side). They have some French blood too (father's side).

Big family - the actual group was made up of brothers Mark, James, Randy, and Eldra (or "El"), and their sister Bunny. Younger siblings Chico, Darryl, and Carol DeBarge were also singers (though not with the group), with Chico later becoming a solo star in his own right.

Their mother is African American and their father is Caucasian.
I didn't find that out until like 2 months ago I was reading Vibe magazine and there was an article about the family and the life they had back then....very interesting.
