That has been a long debate among proggers for a while now, but mant point to the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's" (1967) album as the kickstart for concept albums & thus, prog rock.

Others say the band Soft Machine were another early prog band. (& they were)

But Rush were def' Not the 'fathers' of it.

I LOVE Rush & Yes, but also listen to

King Crimson, Genesis, Jethro Tull, ELP, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, Glass Hammer, bit of Porcupine Tree, Mars Volta & I Love Van Der Graaf Generator.

Edit*

"what progressive means" lol Don't worry, on the prog website I go to, that's also been a long standing debate. Generally, it's music that goes outside the norms of song structure, time sigs, instrumentation, vocal arrangments, etc. Anything "outside of the box" is fair game for prog rock.

i always though progressive meant that a band kept "progressing", and getting better and changing their music after each album.

some progressive bands include old Metallica, Slayer, System Of A Down

My favorite prog band is Nevermore. I also like Dream Theater, Opeth, Liquid Tension Experiment, Blind Guardian, Tool,
