They are not two COMPLETELY different things. Pop music is actually not a style as much as it is an intent for a particular piece of music of any type. Wikipedia says:
"Pop music is an ample and imprecise category of modern music not defined by artistic considerations but by its potential audience or prospective market. Pop is music composed with deliberate intent to appeal to the majority of its contemporaries.[1][2][3]
In opposition to music that requires education or formation to appreciate, a defining characteristic of pop music is that anyone is able to enjoy it. So any genre of music could be pop. I think they should get rid of the "pop" label entirely and go back to straight genres.

No. Anything on the radio is technically pop. Pop stands for popular culture, which is anything on the radio, tv, ect. It is anything that is not truly underground.
It depends on who is doing the categorizing. At the record store it doesn't matter, I'd just as soon that they combined all the genres because so many artists are hard to classify. But if it's for an awards show or something like that, then it makes them even more ridiculous than they already are ... how much sense does it make for, say, the White Stripes or the Foo Fighters to compete with Justin Timberlake or Beyonce?

It doesn't bother me at all. I don't think it would bother me if they split them up, either. But I do think that there would be a lot of arguments from people who have rigid definitions as to what constitutes Pop.
