I was asked to mentor 8 African American freshman who were below their reading level. It was a partnership program between the college I teach at and a local high school. This was several years ago. After I did a brief assessment I brought in some hip hop magazines which we read together. In one of the magazines was an article about Tupac and some of his poetry. This lead to a discussion about him.
When it was time to pick a book for the group to read, I told them I had a surprise for them. I bought each of them a copy of Tupac's biography that was written by Michael Dyson (who is an awesome writer by the way). We read that together. I was very struck by him as a person and an artist and it's a strong impression that I still have.
The students paid me back by agreeing to read my favorite book "A Tale of Two Cities."
I was very proud of all those young men when they scored at reading level at the end of the year. Several of them still keep in touch with me and love to read.
That's how Tupac blessed my life.
