I'm want to learn to play guitar, I'm torn between going acoustic or ele!

Question: I would like to learn to play the guitar. I love the sounds of electric guitar and the type of music played on it (classic rock/rock), but i checked out Yahoo Answers, and it seems like everyone leans toward learning an acoustic first.

The main reason being it's tougher on your fingers/hands to learn, which improves your technique and makes you even better in electric.

My question is, is that really so? Is it worth spending the extra $200 on an acoustic, then spending another $400 on an electric?

How did you learn? I want to hear peoples opinions. And feedback from people who took the electric to acoustic route. And people who took the acoustic to electric route.

If I took the electric route in learning, will I be limited on my skill or would it take longer to be a better player? Than taking the acoustic for awhile, then going electric.

I'm confused. I want to p

Hey,
I've been a professional guitarist for about 20 years now. I personally learned on an 12 string acoustic. It was pure hell at first. I enjoyed it and was moving along slowly when one day (about 6 months later) I grabbed a electric. The neck all of a sudden was half the size and a buddy of mine taught me about power chords. From then on forget about it - I was off playing Van Halen tunes a few months later.
The one thing learning acoustic first is that you'll learn all the first position chords . I would have to say that starting on electric you probably just jump to power chords - which is fine, but you may have trouble getting yourself to learn the chords later on.
So in my opinion, it doesn't really matter. If your into it, you'll learn all the stuff you should. For me however, without a doubt, I found picking up the electric AFTER learning on acoustic made playing electric way way easier.
One last note - just so you know, you'll never ever learn everything on guitar ever - that's what's cool about it 20 years later.
Peace

I learned on electric growing up. Now I have acoustic. I prefer the feel of the acoustic to the electric. If I were in your shoes though I would put the money I would spend on the acoustic toward the price of the electric. I honestly do not think it would take longer to be a better player if you played only electric and you wouldn't be limited in skill by doing so.

i would start with acoustic, then go to electric

get electric i have a les paul and im not even that great .electric can b better bc u can increase the sound with an amp.

get an electric strat and they are not that expensive. on samash.com the Squier SE Special Stratocaster Electric Guitar Package (Assorted Colors) is $199

I've heard that it's best to learn acoustic first because the strings are much tougher to play, so it's an easier transition into the electric, whereas if you learn to play the electric first, you'd have a harder time adjusting from the easier to play strings.

I prefer acoustic while learning.

ive heard from lots of people and the internet that eletric is easyer 2 play. Ive heard that its 4 beginners.

start acoustic. its simpler. an electic just has gagets and gizmos you wont be able to really use until you learn to play(a good amount) i learnd on an acoustic now i do elec.

Acoustic because it is harder and by the time you start on electric you'll fly through it because it'll be easier you see on an acoustic you have to press the strings down harder and it's hard getting to that point in the beggining to get the sound right but on an electric you don't have to press the strings as hard i started with an acousic at the age of 10 and i am 15 now and for a 15 year old girl i'm pretty good and i started with an acoustic and then electric so i hoped i helped.

I would go with whichever suits your style of music best.

the good point on electric, it its more versitile.
the good point for acoustic, you need no amp.

but it's really a presonal choice as to where to start,
there is no right/wrong answer here....

I started with both!!!!

I like electric.
Im thinking of playing it myself maybe.
