Do you think a band's image has twisted the genre that they fall under?!

Question: i can think of TONS of examples:
i JUST saw a post where someone said their favorite punk band was MCR, and it got me thinking

question:
do you agree with this question?
what examples can you think of?

yea i agree, i saw that post... and some people even call avril lavigne punk...what idiots mtv turned them into. this other guy asked if he was a metal head and he posted a bunch of bands he liked, and some included paramore, jonas brothers, hawthorne heights, and etc. there where only 2 decent bands in his list... and he thought he was more metal than this asian guy at his school just cause that other guy was asian...really, that guy needs help. whoever watches mtv needs help.

Guns N' Roses - Just because they started in L.A. in the 80s and at first Axl looked a little glam, everyone classifies them as a hair band even though they aren't.

Of course it affects the genre. Image is what music is all about now. Sadly, with the tangible record biz tanking, this has a definite correlation. Labels want a band they can market immediately. This can only be done through image.

Extreme -- often classified as a hair metal band, they are much more bad-*** than that (and often pigeon-holed because of "More than Words"). They're a hard driving funk rock band, with great songwriting and phenominal guitar playing.

its the lovely effect that mtv has had on the music industry.

my example for you:
Alice in Chains...usually brushed aside with other "grunge" bands just simply because they were from Seattle.

Thank god the same thing didn't happen to Queensryche
