well you can play the song, but in a different way, but in your own style of playing. like for example stairway to heaven by bob dylan. listen to that, and then listen to the guns 'n roses version. bob dylan did it originaly and the chord progression is very simple but still sounds good. and izzy from guns 'n roses spiced it up a bit, and then slash added power chords and such, can't forget the solo!
