You can't even compare RHCP to the Smashing Pumpkins, The pumpkins win everytime.
Lyrically and stylistically the Smashing Pumpkins are a superior band, their of a much higher caliber.

Pumpkins are good, but the Chili Peppers are great.
It's kind of a 50/50 for me. I like both of the bands and prefer both bands older stuff.
I guess I'd have to go with RHCP just because I enjoy more of their music.

If I had to choose one, it would be RHCP.
Although I do not like their new stuff playing on the radio, at least I know it and am aware of it. When it comes to the Pumpkins, I lost interest after Meloncholie and the Infinite Sadness came out and never looked back.
BUT, if you were to ask me about favorite albums between the two, I would choose Pumpkins Siamese Dream because...well, because it's great. Blood Sugar Sex Majik would come in at a close second.
Red Hot Chili Peppers. I guess because I grew up listening to them. I honestly haven't listened to a lot of Smashing Pumpkins though.

DEFINITELY Smashing Pumpkins. RHCP just isn't "dirty" enough. What I mean is the way they sound. There is just a ear-gratifying quality to Pumpkins that RHCP doesn't do for me.
Sick of Chili Peppers. They get a lot of radio play here in SoCal, gets old.
RHCP definitely.
of course its "faith no more" had about a 100 times more talent than both those bands in that era.
