Why is it so bad if a band goes mainstream?!

Question: People think that just because a band is really popular they are sellouts. I mean I dont listen to my chemical romance, or paramore, flyleaf bands that you hear about all the time. But people think that just because they are 'emo' and 'popular' they are sellouts. You people don't actually know...and actually I believe they are sellouts too...because sometimes you can tell when they just don't care about their music, they only wanna be famous and want money.
But, say a band that isn't too popular, if alot more people start liking them people are like, " well now it kinda sucks because alot more people are starting to like them. "
It's like why does it matter if they are popular or if they are emo, or if they are mainstream, if you like them, you like them.

So why is it so bad if a band wants to go mainstream and be heard more and be more popular?

because once they get a glint of fame. they'll do anything to reach it, including changing their sound to gain commercial success.

bands that have done this: fall out boy, plain white tees, my chemical romance, bands like that

and that just doesnt fly with me

of course, there are bands that change their sound because they want to try something now, and could care less about the money. and thats A-OK

cuz ppl hate sell outs for some reason. but if i was one of them i'd sell out rite away to make millions. haha. hardcore fans whom have followed them from the beginning of their carrer hate it for some reason if their favorite band becomes successful. i dont know ppl are just stupid.

i agree its not there fault that people like their music. like when everyone said metallica were sellouts because of enter sandman. it wasnt there fault it got big.

by going mainstream and bein a sellout is when they change their music to get a bigger fanbase. instead of staying true to what they really are. and that is what sucks

it isnt bad if they go mainstream, it just matters in which fashion they do it for example......Megadeth went mainstream, but still thrashing hard, on the other hand Metallica went after 1 mainstream album turned into TRASH metal

Because they don't want to be a "conformist" :P

A lot of people just get irritated when they liked the band and suddenly a bunch of people who didn't like them until MTV or something played them and so the band launches into the mainstream
It's more of a pride thing, like "oh I liked them before everyone else" so those other people aren't "real fans"

also sometimes bands that go mainstream people feel like they changed themselves/their music so more people would like it instead of staying true to themselves

Okay lets take a prime example, STAIND.

this is a band that had enormous potential but got a taste of radio friendly popularity and chose it.

because most people hate it when a band they stuck with for a long time got so popular over night by radio time. the radio pretty much kills music...if the band is good i will listen to them...if their guitarist is insanely wicked i will love the band

That's not really the truth of it though.
People dislike having music go "mainstream" because that results in people overobsessing and creating stereotypes that all fans of that particular artist/band are like that...Which is something that people don't want to happen.

I don't believe that a band would "want" to go mainstream. By that, I assume you mean they want to be accepted and recognised. I truly think that that is the initial intention of an artist or band, is not to be "mainstream." I am fairly sure that musicians are aware of the kind of fanbase they want. That's what they think about, not becoming "mainstream."

This is a growing situation. People who follow from the start get mad when other people start to like them. I don't get it

It isn't so bad if a band goes mainstream. I think that Tool sounds great now as they did 15 years ago when they weren't mainstream. It depends on how you change your style though. They are many Melodic Death Metal bands that turn to Metalcore after going mainstream. Examples are Shadows Fall and In Flames. Metalcore isn't a genre that is widely accepted by Metalheads around the world, therefore they will most likely be more fans lost than gained.

i agree, becoming popular doesn't always = selling out. sometimes it does. but what i really hate is when a band changes their sound, with no intent to gain popularity, people complain and say the new sound sucks and call them sell outs. no, thats called progression. bands don't want to put out the same album over and over again.

and in my opinion, it doesn't matter if a band i like becomes popular. as long as they still play good music for the right reasons, its all good.

I usually don't have a problem with a band going mainstream. It's some of the fans they gain by becoming popular that irritate me.
If they change the sound of their music to appeal to a wider audience then they are sellouts and I no longer like them.

It's not bad to go mainstream...Unless you give the bird to all your old die-hard fans, and go play crappy pop music that you know all the kiddies will love.

Here's my example of selling out. I think it's a pretty good one..

After: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9lBtPG4Q...

If a band starts out playing a certain style of music but dont make it big and switch styles and do get big it looks fake. Im a little drunk so Iam slurring my words. Sugar Ray for instance. They started off fairly heavy. As soon as Fly got popular they started doing a bunch of acoustic songs. They were doing it just for the money not the love of music. Thats what people hate. They sold out. Other times fans just want something of their own so they blame bands for selling out when its not reallyt true.

its not bad if a band goes mainstream and gains popularity and fans. whats bad is when said band completely changes their music style (**cough-metallica-cough**) to conform with whatever is popular at the time. the music that makes bands popular isn't always what they end up playing a few albums later. as the music scene changes, said band will play whatever is on the radio instead of what they originally played. thats what selling out is to me. thats why most of the metal i listen to is "unpopular" here in the states because then it will keep the integrity of the music and i know that the albums will continue to kick *** into the future. i never want the bands i listen to to become radio friendly.

because idiots and stupid screaming little girls will like them...and noone wants to be associated with that

To be a sellout, you have to have some talent in the first place, so I don't see why you are listing MCR.

It's not bad when a band becomes more mainstream.
It's bad when a band compromises their artistic integrity in order to do so.

I'm OK with bands going mainstream as long as they don't compromise on their sound to appeal to the masses.
